We
began the day with a short walk to view some of Fethiye's (ancient
Telmessos) tombs that are carved in the sheer rock cliff above
the town. There
a still a few Lycian stone sarcophagi around town — some in the
middle of the streets.
We took a small boat across the
bay to Gemiler Island which is covered with remarkable Byzantine
ruins. We hiked to the top of the hill where there were wonderful
views in all directions.
We had another good lunch at a
restaurant below the hill covered with the dwellings of the
abandoned Greek village, Kayakoy. We wandered through this
ghost town which was a busy town until the 1920's.
We
ended our day at a large "tacky" touristic hotel in Pamukkale.
